What is Redetermination?

Each year, Medi-Cal members must complete an annual renewal, also called redetermination, so their county can determine whether they still qualify for coverage. Most people who go through the renewal process continue to qualify. However, some people lose coverage because they miss important mail, have outdated contact information, or don’t return required forms on time.

Completing your renewal on time is one of the best ways to avoid losing Medi-Cal coverage if you still qualify.

Step-by-Step Renewal Process

If you or a family member has Medi-Cal, it’s important to stay informed and complete your renewal on time. Follow the steps below to help keep the Medi-Cal coverage you and your family depend on.

Step 1
Update your contact information.

Step 2
Look for your Medi-Cal renewal notice. Your notice will arrive around your renewal month. In many counties, it may arrive in a yellow envelope.

Step 3
Read your notice carefully.

Step 4
Complete your renewal form, if needed.

Step 5
You have options when it comes to how you submit your renewal. You can submit it online, by phone, by mail, or in person.

Step 6
Haven’t heard anything? Check your status. If you haven’t received a notice by your renewal month, contact your county office to check your status.

Step 7
If your coverage ends, you still have options. You may be able to reapply for Medi-Cal. Submit missing documents or appeal the decision. If you no longer qualify, your information may be transferred to Covered California.
