Medi-Cal rules have changed in 2026, including updates that may affect who can enroll, what benefits are available, and what current members need to do to keep their coverage. If you or a family member has Medi-Cal, that doesn’t necessarily mean your coverage is ending. But it is important to stay informed and know when your renewal is due.
Each year, your county reviews whether you and your family members still qualify for Medi-Cal through a process called annual redetermination, or renewal. Most people who go through the renewal process still qualify, but coverage can be lost because of missed mail, outdated contact information, or renewal forms that aren’t returned on time.
No one should lose their health coverage because they missed a letter, moved to a new address, or didn’t know what steps to take. Medi-Cal renewal is more than paperwork. It is about protecting access to doctor visits, medications, preventative care, and the services families rely on every day.
We are committed to guiding our patients throughout the renewal process, helping them understand their options, complete required forms, and stay connected to the care they need. Our message is simple: Don’t ignore your renewal notice. With Lumira Healthcare, you don’t have to navigate the process alone.
We’re here to help you understand the renewal process and avoid unnecessary gaps in coverage.
Seven steps to make sure you keep the coverage you and your family depend on:
Step 1: Update your contact information.
Don’t wait for a notice to arrive. Make sure your county has your current address, phone number, and email. If they can’t reach you, you can lose coverage even if you still qualify. Update at BenefitsCal.com or call your county office.
Step 2: Look for your Medi-Cal renewal notice.
Your notice will arrive around your renewal month. In many counties, it may arrive in a yellow envelope.
Step 3: Read your notice carefully.
You will receive one of two things: (A) a letter confirming you’re renewed for another year and no action is needed, or (B) a form requesting updated information.
Step 4: Complete your renewal form, if needed.
Fill out the form, sign it, and return it with any documents requested by the deadline on your notice.
Step 5: Submit your renewal your way.
If a renewal is required, you can submit it online, by phone, by mail, or in person.
- Online: BenefitsCal.com
- By phone: Call your local county office
- By mail: Return the form in the envelope provided
- In person: Visit your local county office
Step 6: Haven’t heard anything since submitting? Check your status.
Renewal notices can be sent to an old address. If you haven’t received a notice by your renewal month, contact your county office to check your status.
Step 7: If your coverage ended, you still have options.
You may be able to reapply for Medi-Cal. Submit missing documents or appeal the decision. If you no longer qualify, your information may be transferred to Covered California. If you need help, please call Lumira at 209-850-3500 ext. 1020.
